The LEAP in the LEAP YEAR CONCERT

In 16 years, this is the ONLY time that the GRANT & WILTON COFFEE HOUSE has a Concert on a LEAP DAY SATURDAY of the LEAP YEAR. Very SPECIAL —It will NOT happen again for more that 16 years.

But LEAP DAYS are SPECIAL — the extra day, added to the calendar about every four years, helps to stay in the NATURAL RHYTHM of the EARTH’S ORBIT around the SUN and in the PASSING of the SEASONS.

A CALENDAR YEAR is a human artifact, which is actually faster than the SOLAR YEAR that defines our planet’s motion through space.  The Earth's orbit around the Sun takes approximately 365.242189 days — rounded, that’s an extra 0.25 days, creating the need for a LEAP DAY and a LEAP YEAR every four years.

LEAP DAYS were first added to the JULIAN CALENDAR in 46 BC by Julius Caesar on the advice of Sosigenes, an Alexandrian astronomer.

However in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII made an improvement creating the GREGORIAN CALENDAR with the assistance of Christopher Clavius, a German mathematician and astronomer.

The GREGORIAN CALENDAR specifies that LEAP DAYS cannot be added in years ending in “00” UNLESS that year is also divisible by 400. The correction was intended to stabilize the calendar over a period of thousands of years and was necessary to account for solar years being slightly less than the 365.25 days.

WHAT IS INTERESTING is that according to calendar rules the year 2000 is deemed to be a LEAP YEAR because it is divisible by 400 - but the year 1900 is NOT.

With that correction, following leap year 1896, eight years must pass before the next LEAP YEAR takes place in 1904 - creating a result in LEAP DAY,  LEAP YEAR being on Saturday, February 29, 2020 - hence the name:
